When assessing pituitary function in the hypopituitary patient, anterior pituitary function should be tested and corrected before function of the posterior pituitary. The reason for this is that decreased ACTH secretion and consequent reduction in cortisol from the adrenal gland decrease the glomerular filtration rate, which can thus obscure the symptoms of polyuria in diabetes insipidus (Fig. 2.19).
